On our way from Idaho to Wyoming to see Yellowstone National Park, we spent the night in a little town called ARCO, just east of the Craters of the Moon. If you didn't pay attention, you'd drive right by it.. but... this town has great history! Best of all, this town is the first little city completely powered by atomic energy.. IMAGINE THAT! When you approach Arco, what will grab your attention is this big mountain with a bunch of numbers on it... What are those numbers???? Count down to blast off???? Come to find out, the graduating high school classes paint their graduation year on that mountain as a rite of passage... We had the pleasure in meeting a young lady of the class of 2015 at the cafe in our RV Park. So, we of course had to find out where her class year is on this mountain. See if you can find it! |
Hey, just so you guys don't think that all we do is sight seeing, taking in all the beauty mother nature has provided us (well, that is most of what we do), but... we also work... Look at Allan pouring over some documents, editing and editing, and editing some more..... :-) Now, don't you feel sorry for us? It is tough duty, but someone's gotta do it. :-) Besides... isn't it great to have an outdoor office! Yes, those are my toes on the hammock... I'm no fool! |
Come to find out this sub has quite a history, and best of all, the engineer working on these projects was at the tiny museum. We were privileged to have met Dr. Clay Condit a physicist who worked on the S1W project! He gave us a fantastic rendition of how the nuclear power technology used during WWII became a peace time technology which started the Nautilus project.
In 1951, a group of pioneering scientists, engineers and technicians generated the world's first usable amount of electricity from a novel nuclear reactor built in the middle of Idaho's Arco desert. Dr. Clay Condit was part of this project and the town of ARCO became the first little city powered completely by nuclear energy. Amazing huh!
