Where to begin... Allan is getting tired of me continuously using the word 'AMAZING'... I just can't find any other way to describe this region. Beautiful, fantastic, breathtaking, astounding, marvelous and any other word one uses to describe something that is just purely.... AMAZING! Each spot was an absolute miracle of nature. Just so you know, the Olympics were set aside as a national monument in 1909 and further protected as Olympic National Park in 1938. Today the park is internationally recognized as a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site! AMAZING...... |
Starting at Fort Worden where history taught us about the strategies of defense of the Puget Sound, to the historical US Coast Guard Pt Wilson Light House, to the little sailing town of Port Townsend where we just happened to see the start of the R2AK (race to Alaska) at Point Hudson.
BTW, I'm totally in love with Port Townsend! Deer were running around, beautiful sailboats were in the water, great beaches, quaint shops & eateries, an antique car place where Allan almost bought a 1929 Model A, cozy homes with lots and lots of flowers.... my kinda place...! Check out our 'Travel in Pictures' for some exciting photos of the race.

Next, the Hurricane Ridge by Port Angeles where I had to break down in the song.......... Edelweis.......Edelweis.....(OK, I'll be quiet now)....
to Crescent Lake where the water was ICE cold (duh...it is glacier fed), to the Salmon Cascades (didn't see any Salmons... too late in the season - still awesome), to Sol Duc Waterfalls (I was brave and did look over the edge).....
then to Sekiu, a small fishing town on the Strait of Juan de Fuca, where we saw over 15 BALD EAGLES with their young ... yes, I kid you not... I was gawking and counting them.. they were flying over my head in front of my nose... UNBELIEVABLE! We probably took over 200 pictures of the eagles alone, fighting amongst each other, digging for clams, and munching on fish......There was truly a pecking order. Seagulls waited patiently until the eagles had enough to eat and went for the left overs. Again... you'll just have to check out our 'Travel in pictures' to see some of these wonders.

Then onward to Neah Bay at the tip of the Peninsula where we learned about the plight of the Makah Indians...to La Push, another Indian reservation (Quileute), which is also a local surf location - amazing beach...onward to Hoh Rain Forest, which was again an unbelievable spot, especially the Hall of Mosses, where I met 4 sweet ladies from Idaho who immediately invited us over to Coeur d Alene, ID.
