Hello everyone! Long time no blog... I know, we've been very lazy lately in keeping up our blog... but... we're baaack... and we'll have to tell you about all our antics from the past 2 months. Yeah, it's been 2 months since our last post. Where have we been and what have we done... OK, I'll try to recap! These are our February antics.
After the bad weather cleared around Ft. Pierce, we went inland around Lake Okeechobee to find a drier place. When we almost got to our destination, La Belle, south west of Lake Okeechobee, we had a hunch that we better call the campsite to make sure that they still have a site open for us. Well, they did, but they said that our site is under water! Aiih... so Allan made one of his famous U-Turns and we drove back to Clewiston where we saw a tiny RV campsite. It turned out that this campsite was the only dry spot around. Good thing that they had 1 spot open. |
With all these snowbirds, we also found out that we had to make reservations well ahead of time to make sure we didn't wind up homeless. Southward we went and found the only available RV campsite at Chokoloskee Island. What a scam!
The place is supposed to be a resort - they charged us $97.90 for the night since it was by the water. Mind you, we've been accustomed to pay max $40/night for some beautiful spots. Sometimes as low as $12/night! Well, the water was a tiny channel and to top it of, WE had NO water and NO cable as the owner of the site did not pay their water bill and probably not their cable bill. Luckily we had a little bit of water left in our tank. The next day the manager told us to 'just take the water from the neighbor'.... Argh! Allan did a great job contesting the services which guilted them in refunding us our $$.. We're outa there! To more exciting adventures.... | No... we didn't go Python hunting, although quite a few people did find 5-6 Pythons in the area we were hiking. Where, you ask... at the Panthers Wildlife Refuge. Hey, panthers are nocturnal animals and we only went hiking during the light of day. It was still the most nerve wrecking hike I ever did, though, especially since we found not just one but two live panther tracks! Yikes! |
It was like hiking in a Panther's cage! Before you get to the Refuge, you see lots of road signs that say 'Panthers Ahead'! If that's not enough, the road and the refuge area is separated by a tall chain link fence with barb wire on top. Then, you enter a tall gate, next you enter a locked gate area to go hiking. OK, were we crazy? You think? I was just hoping that these cats were sound asleep. Of course it didn't help when Allan keeps on calling.. here kitty kitty! The trails were quite a challenge as the heavy rains made the trails quite muddy and wet. We found ourselves ankle deep in water at several spots.
Are we having fun yet? Here kitty, kitty!
