Craters of the Moon
In 1923, Geologist Harold T. Stearns described the Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve as 'The surface of the moon as seen through a telescope'.
The vast volumes of lava were not from a single volcano but from a series of deep fissures, known collectively as the Great Rift, that cross the Snake River Plain.
This amazing place reminded us so much of the Big Island of Hawaii sans the Ohia trees. Madame Pele would be proud to see this place.
In an effort not to misquote the uniqueness of this area, I'm going to post some very interesting tidbits of this area (see below).
