It seems appropriate that on this day, commemorating the disaster of 9/11, we post the 'Reality Check' we experienced when we camped in the midst of the cornfields in Cascade, Iowa, a couple of days ago. As we were turning in for the night, the evening was dark and very quiet. Just the kind of night we like. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, we heard a bunch of trucks going by our site. Mind you, the main road is quite a few miles away. So, what caused this frenzy of heavy equipment sounding trucks to drive like maniacs through a campground? We peaked out our window... and this is what we saw! |
A fire had broken out! Luckily the fire fighters quickly put the fire out. Our reality check came the next morning. A RV (camper trailer) about 1/4 mile from where we camped apparently caught fire. In a very short time, there was absolutely NOTHING left of the RV. Luckily the owners were away at that time and no one was hurt. Sooo, seeing this sobering view, so close to us, we crafted a more detailed emergency escape plan. Let's hope we'll never need to execute our plan.
